You may recognize some of these “Smoochie” faces by Leslie Aguillard –

I like to do series.  I wanted to show wrinkles, age, shadows, non-traditional portraits and make them interesting, at least to me.  Originally it was just a self-portrait, and then it was only going to be old people, but I am doing young people as well.   I like drawing other artists.

One artist remarked that the reason why artists do self-portraits is because the model is free, available, and doesn’t mind if liberties are taken with the image.  That is good because I’d rather draw character, and have people like the image of a smooch, and the colors – it’s different, it shows fun and life.
These are all 14 x 17 on Bristol with ink and colored pencil.   I have sold several of them ($100) and that is, I think, a deal.

President’s Soap Box

president's soap box“Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye.. it also includes the inner pictures of the soul.”  – Edvard Munch

So…how do you put your soul on a canvas? Or cut it from the branch or melt it in a fire? I think it just happens whenever you open yourself to the creative process. It doesn’t matter if you paint a representation of a tree or splash color with your eyes closed, letting the creative energy out of your body is the expression of the soul.

With Memorial Day weekend fast approaching, I offer a gentle challenge to all who read this. Between grilling and visiting and tipping back a brew, find a moment to express the inner pictures of your soul. Write a poem, paint, sculpt, dance, sing, express your inner pictures!

We are still looking to fill a number of board positions so if you are interested in any of the volunteer positions available or if you want to volunteer to help as a support person for the various positions, please contact President@coloradoartistsguild.org
