I want my patrons to enjoy seeing my art just as much as I enjoy making it.

Having spent my early years entertaining guests in the lobby of my parents’ motel, I learned early on how much fun it can be to put a smile on someone’s face. Thus the inspiration for my whimsical works was born! After exploring many different forms of art, I have Judi Mitchellfound my ultimate love in ceramics, particularly Raku, which gives my pieces the rich colors and organic elements essential to clay creatures. I find my muse in those random pieces of wood or metal that manage to become the legs, trunks, or tusks of my ceramic animals. These critters have managed to make their way into galleries throughout the nation and internationally. (From http://artbyjudi.com/about_me/)

There is the strong possibility of a brand new plein air event in Littleton. The Aspen Grove Plein Air Art Festival. It will be held on or around Aug 25 – 31. It will be a quick 1 – 3 day paint the shops around Aspen Grove (Mineral and S.Santa Fe) event that will have music and a chance to hang and sell and possibly have awards. It is still in the planning stages but the shopping center is very keen on marketing the event and artist that participate. There may be a juried process to get in or a juried process to get high quality art hung in a limited space at the mall to sell. All this is still in the planning process. If you think this is a good idea and would like to be a part, please let Cliff Austin know by emailing him, cliffaustin@comcast.net and carbon copy Lori or Ted Garcia at tg@tlcunlimited.com.

Event Summary
Celebrating it’s 6th year, the Orchard Arts Festival is a well established festival held in the Historic Westminster Arts District.  This one day event draws attendees from all of the front range including Denver and surrounding cities.  The festival has shown significant growth in attendance over the last two years and also has significant support from the City of Westminster.    Fine artists & studio craft artist are invited to participate. In addition to vendor booths, the festival features live public art demos & projects. The vendor booths are predominately artist and studio craft booths. Other booths include sponsor booths and non-profits, as well as  a partnership with the Westminster Farmer’s Market. The festival set up will include the street, sculpture garden & parks.  Food trucks, beer garden & live music will also provide a significant draw to the event.

The Orchard Arts Festival is unique in that it has a small town feel set in a big city.  It is surrounded by the historic buildings and homes that made up this agricultural center in the late 1800’s.  The festival derives its name from the Apple Orchards that once graced the surrounding lands.  Westminster is the largest suburb of Denver, the Harris Park neighborhood in which the festival is held, was where the city originated, now it is the home of the Historic Westminster Arts District, which houses several SCFD organizations, including SWAG (South Westminster Arts Group), the festival promoter.

Art on Loan Program

Dear Artists,

Welcome to the fifth year of the Art on Loan program for Senator Michael Bennet’s Washington D.C. office, coordinated by the Colorado Artists Guild.

We have exciting news, beginning with this year’s submission, we have now been asked to expand this art on loan program to include Senator Cory Gardner’s office as well.

Senator Bennet and his staff are again looking for 12 to 15 pieces of 2D artwork and possibly 2 or 3 sculptural pieces. Because the Senator’s office and conference rooms have 25 ft ceilings, they would like large pieces of artwork with a minimum height of 36 inches (including frame). As for style, they continue to be open to all submissions.

Senator Gardner and his staff are looking for a mix of sizes. Like Senator Bennet’s office, they have a few rooms with 25ft ceilings, but they also have other rooms that are smaller, so could use a few pieces of artwork in the 18” to 24” size range. The style they are looking for is a little more specific. Senator Gardner enjoys artwork that is more historic, and because he is from the eastern plains he would like see artwork that represents that part of the state as well.

Loan Program:

Open to Colorado Artists Only
Loan term – 1 to 2 years
Shipping will be paid for by the Senator’s office
Artwork will be insured

Submission:

Maximum of 2 images per person
Image size: 72 DPI and no larger than 1920 Pixels on the long side.
Image should be labeled as: last name_Title.jpg
Email images to info@coloradoartistsguild.org
Submission deadline: Monday, August 31, 2015

It’s the fifth year of the Art on Loan program for Senator Michael Bennet’s Washington D.C. office, coordinated by the Colorado Artists Guild.

President’s Soap Box

president's soap box“Learn the rules like a pro, so you can break them like an artist.” ~Pablo Picasso

Have you ever wondered how you can make a living as an artist instead of just doing it as a hobby?

The art world rules say you have to find a niche and get gallery representation. A lot of the blogs and business advice sites out there today say keep your day job, but I would like to offer another option…do whatever it takes and be willing to open your world to a variety of income sources to kick the day job and keep your bills paid with your creative works. In other words, don’t just rely on getting into gallery shows to pay the bills. Look at other sources of income like teaching, commission projects, online sales and festivals.

Also, dare to be yourself! You don’t have to be like everyone else who sells to make a sale. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and maybe even be willing to be laughed at. Be odd, be out there and be dangerous if that is true to who you are.

Ultimately it boils down to having a positive outlook and a willingness to to be critisized and ridiculed for not following the rules…but YOU are an ARTIST…so break some rules!

We are still looking to fill a number of board positions so if you are interested in any of the volunteer positions available or if you want to volunteer to help as a support person for the various positions, please contact President@coloradoartistsguild.org

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve always been a creative person.  I got serious and began taking classes at the Art Students League-Denver in 2007, in drawing, anatomy, watercolor and pastel. I also participated in several student workshops to Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico with my pastel and watercolor teachers and other students  in the summers.
Painting with Acrylic was something I tried on my own.  Each new medium has its strengths and weaknesses.  I love texture and continue to incorporate various techniques into my acrylic paintings.
Painting teaches you to learn from your mistakes and risk trying new ideas.  That’s part of the fun.  Also, patience, patience, patience as the painting evolves through various phases.
There are also two of my most recent paintings displayed.  One called “Springtime on the Rocks” and the other “Green/red No. One”.
I think going to the CAG meetings is vital for my development as an artist and encourage more members to do so.
Warmly,
Pat Swift

aurora_arts_festival_2015_lowAjai will be at the Aurora Arts Festival Saturday, June 27th. The focus is recycled/upcycled arts and crafts.

Much of what I will have at the fest is created from found objects and recycled/reclaimed/revamped and renewed materials. Each piece is created with a specific meditative intent. For example, the “Earth Meditation” ring was created while meditating on healing the earth… ~ Ajai

President’s Soap Box

president's soap box““Creativity takes courage.” ~Henri Matisse

Sometimes it’s hard to put yourself out there with little to no idea of how you will be greeted or if you will be accepted. I see it all the time…people afraid to try something new for fear that what they experiment with will not be embraced by the art community or potential collectors.

I have watched very talented artists get bored with what they do because they are “afraid to change what works…” and don’t want to risk “wasting time” on something un-vetted. Yet, they grow weary of creating the same thing over and over…

So…how do you fix this? Have the courage to be creative! Don’t be afraid to try something different. Sure, you can keep your “tried and true” for the show or fair, but put a little spice in it and sample one of your “new creations” while you lean comfortably on your “sure thing.”

We are still looking to fill a number of board positions so if you are interested in any of the volunteer positions available or if you want to volunteer to help as a support person for the various positions, please contact President@coloradoartistsguild.org

My art is an expression of my heart and soul; a search for “Truth” and an admiration for nature and life. I want my art to be purposeful , free and inspiring.

The will to continue with my art comes from the Loving Heavenly Voice that tells me “keep up with your art”. The driving force in my fingers to hold the brush and create original art is a gift of “True Love” from my family. As I progress on the path of an artistic pilgrim, I seek to engage viewers into an artistic consciousness to love and respect Mother Earth . – Pushpa Sunder Mehta, M.D
